“Weakened by hunger… they are reduced to begging for their most basic right to wander like blind men, wandering like human wrecks, looking for a daily pittance.”

Food occupies an important space in our everyday lives. For some, eating is a pleasure and a past time, while others around the globe struggle for basic subsistence and even die of starvation. Artist Serge Olivier Fokoua seeks to shake people awake by exposing them to the hardships faced by humanity around the globe. What’s for Dinner? Is a site-specific performance that has been performed in major cities of international repute. Rooted in space and time, the performance comments on our unique relation to food and other members of the global community.

Fokoua’s performance will consist of the artist and a volunteer wandering blindly through the streets of Calgary with pots on their heads. A case of the “blind leading the blind” the artist and volunteer will rely on canes and each other, to navigate their urban environment.

Serge Olivier Fokoua was born in Cameroon and now resides in Gatineau, Quebec. He has received academic training in Cameroon and Germany and is President of the artists collective, Les Palettes du KAMER, and director of the international visual art Festival RAVY, both in Yaoundé, Cameroon. He has shown his work internationally in Canada, France, Cameroon, Germany, Finland, and the United States.
