Possible performance is a collectively authoured participatory performance and workshop. The public is invited to perform a score that takes place in a set. The score is developed from different embodiments of impossibility, such as physical difficulty, irreducibility, and illegibility. Impossibility decentralizes the terms of productivity and failure to rewrite the definitions of possibility. The not-possible is a type of refusal to a socio-economic condition in which our ability to find creative solutions, do more with less, and “stay positive” is not only capitalized upon, but forces us towards complicity.

Participants are referred to as ‘players’, referencing both the game-like nature of the performance and the French word for acting: jouer. They will be suited up with a costume-uniform provided by the artist. In this way, the players go to work.

You can be dramatic. You can be banal. There is no audience. There is no ‘outside’ the performance- just like real life. The economy of performer/spectator is reconstituted through what each player brings to the script and how they decide to be together. There is, however, a videocamera triggering the players to imagine a frame around them, and by extension to consider the role they play in context. The camera is a feeling camera, it responds to the feeling of being seen.

Emma-Kate Guimond is an Edmonton-born, Montreal-based artist. Moving nonchalantly between performance, video, writing and drawing, her approach is embodied. Concerned with the friction between what is felt and what is understood, her work examines different modes of performativity, ranging from unaware, to banal, to brutalist, to expressionistic, to spectacular and to dramatic. The strangeness, embarrassment, absurdity and error that are visible in her work function as modes of resistance towards a society of performance. Reflecting certain tensions between the image and the body, which are present in her work, Emma-Kate Guimond has a BFA in Contemporary Dance (Concordia, 2012) and an MA in Visual and Media Arts (UQAM 2017). She has presented performances at Visualeyez Festival in Edmonton (2013), Mountain Standard Time in Calgary (2014), FADO Emerging artist series in Toronto (2014), Performancy Forum in Brooklyn, NY (2015) as well as the RIPA in Montreal (2016). From 2009-2017 she was also co-director of the feminist performance collective, WIVES, with whom she presented feeled at the OFFTA in 2016 and ACTION MOVIE at Théâtre La Chapelle in 2017.
