A simultaneous projection on four TV sets, Music (for my father) features a close-up view of the artist singing a repertoire of warm-up exercises, chords, songs, old favourites, and traditional Croatian hits. While Horvat is not a musician by trade, she creates an opportunity for herself to be a star — if only in her own video. Unlike the slick production and polished outfits of American Idol and popular stars, Music makes public a very intimate, raw, and self-conscious performance, confusing the distinctions between spectacle and private ritual.
Nina Horvat has been a member of the Croatian Association of Artists for 18 years, during which time she has worked in painting, ceramic, and video. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb and has exhibited her work throughout Europe.
