Creating artwork that mimics the structure of our social institutions, artist Hugo Nadeau comments on the contexts of these apparatuses through actions, installations, new media projects, and permanent systems. Recognizing the hierarchies that exist within the local landscape, the artist comments on the instruments that are integral to the nervous system of Calgary. A self-declared “new media craftsman”, Nadeau aims to expose the various political, economic, and socio-cultural factors at play within the city.

Participating in a self-organized residency in Alberta, the artist will collect footage for his video installation and corresponding performance at M:ST 8. The final project will result in three contextual video performances presented as a triptych, and another, physical performance by the artist will mimic actions from the video-based work.

Presented in partnership with the EMMEDIA Gallery and Production Society and the Trianon Gallery.

Hugo Nadeau is a French-Canadian performance, media and poetry artist currently based out of Montreal. His projects have been shown in Canada, Brazil, China, England and the United States.
