“Dreams contain images and thought associations which we do not create with conscious intent. They rise spontaneously without our assistance and are representatives of a psychic activity withdrawn from our arbitrary will…We might expect dreams to give us certain indica about the objective causality as well as about the objective tendencies, because they are nothing less than self portraits of the psychic life process.” — Carl Jung

If the conscious human chooses to retract away from their present waking reality, it results in the inverse of an overactive ego. This dormant version of the self – which is veiled behind the subconscious mind – in fact carries with it equal vibrational patterns in the egotistical human. In reconstructing the stories and symbols from the dream state, there is an attempt to find balance between two worlds. Their shared language: sensation.

Dual Nature comes in dream states as an antidote to suffocation. When the Roman gods were degraded into demons they would in part retire into the stars and in part into the metals of the earth. Dual Nature is the way conflicting behaviors of light (particulate and waveform) can be understood to be occurring simultaneously. Duality is not an expression of absolute dichotomy, but a way of reconciling a complex state of disagreement where mutually exclusive elements can co-exist.

The journey begins with sand, a neutral base and comforting elemental ground. Magnus Tiesenhausen and Kylie Ward will take reprieve from the waking life in a disused riding arena just outside of Calgary city limits. Here, they will write the story that slowly unfolds each morning after hours of unconscious exploration.

Magnus Tiesenhausen is an interdisciplinary artist based in southern Alberta. Tiesenhausen’s work operates within productive disagreements between magic and materiality; structure and indeterminacy; and reverence and punk energy.

Kylie B. Ward is focused on individual susceptibility and human expression of subtle energies. Her work is based in sound, memory, and invoking spirits in vibrational frequencies.
